About Us
Our History:
Birdhouse Farmers Market is a friendly, all-weather, year-round mid-week, food-focused farmers market promoting healthy eating, a love of community and a clean environment. Born as a project of the William Byrd Community House (WBCH) in 2007 and based in the Oregon Hill neighborhood, the Byrd House Market sought to bring fresh, locally produced foods to central Richmond food deserts. When WBCH closed its doors in Fall 2015 after 93 years as a social services organization, the farmers market had to reorganize itself into a viable independent market and did. The next year, Byrd House Market became Birdhouse Famers Market, opening a few blocks west in Randolph. In 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Birdhouse Farmers Market added an online shopping option for the safety and convenience of our customers and extended the online season to year-round, adding the Birdhouse Winter Online Market. Throughout our history, Birdhouse has accepted SNAP and provided a match through the Virginia Fresh Match program. We are committed to providing greater access to healthy local foods and to supporting our local economy.
Our Mission:
Established in 2007, Birdhouse Farmers Market, is a non-profit organization, committed to strengthening our local food system and improving the health and well-being of the Richmond community.
